LOWER MORELAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — Things grew tense Monday night during a school board meeting in Montgomery County over a district’s decision to keep its mask mandate in place while others simply recommended masking.

From Tuesday, Lower Moreland will join other schools in strongly recommending masks instead of making them mandatory.

There was an emergency meeting Monday night to address and amend the district’s health and safety plan, which required masks in classrooms after a major backlash.

It all started after the CDC upgraded Montgomery County to a high COVID community level.

This prompted many school districts, including Lower Moreland, to quickly reinstate the mask mandate in schools.

While the majority of neighboring schools quickly rescinded this requirement, citing clarification from the CDC, Lower Moreland opted to keep it.

Parents for and against masks spoke Monday evening.

“They made the right decision, I’m glad they did. It was the only decision. They woke us up, they woke me up. We need to get more involved in the school, which they try to do, what they did. They tried to push the boundaries, the parents came together, the community came together, we won,” one man said.

“It creates such a divide between neighbors and families. You are either on one side or the other and it affects our children at this point. And it’s really sad. We were starting to get back together,” one woman said.

Law enforcement also came into play when making this decision. Many parents have said they plan to send their children to school without a mask anyway. This decision comes with only 14 school days left.
