Keith Urban recalls meeting Dolly Parton for the first time: ‘It was surreal because I grew up singing her songs’

Keith Urban remembers meeting another country singer Dolly Parton for the first time during a May appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Showcalling the experience “surreal” because he “grew up singing his songs”.

Urban shared these comments with DeGeneres after mentioning that Parton had said she would like to sing a duet with him.

“That’s the coolest thing. Dolly Parton said, uh, I think someone asked her if she should duet with someone, who would it be, and she said you,” said DeGeneres told Urban, referring to a appearance on hello america in which Parton praised the “Wild Hearts” singer.

“Very cool,” DeGeneres later remarked.

“She’s so sweet,” Urban agreed.

“She said you remind her of her brothers, I don’t know what that means,” DeGeneres continued.

“That was so sweet,” Urban reiterated. “I think she just meant…I come from working class parents and a rural background in Australia, uh, and I think…the first time I met Dolly she sang with me a couple of times , but the first time I met her, uh, it was surreal because I mean, I grew up singing her songs,” he explained.

“[As a] I actually sang his songs because I was nine and my voice wasn’t broken yet and I sounded like him,” he said, adding, “I could sing in his key.

“Can you do this now?” DeGeneres asked amid laughter from the studio audience.

“No,” Urban admitted.

Parton appeared on CMG in January of this year and was asked who would be his dream duo and dessert partner while promoting his Duncan Hines cake mix line. Parton was quick to nominate Urban.

“I love Keith Urban”, Parton said on CMG. “I always thought he was one of the most talented and cutest guys in the world – I’m not trying to hit on him, because he has Nicole [Kidman], and who could beat that; it’s Jolene. I love his writing and I just think he’s expensive. I would be happy to bake him a big cake and spend the whole afternoon singing songs,” she added.

Urban covered “AppleJack”, Parton’s song with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt as a child in 1978 at QTQ 9 studios in Brisbane.
